ACTIVITIES ORIENETED IN HANDICAPPED ANIMALS IN TURKEY
THE IMPORTANCE PLACED ON THE ANIMALS BY THE TURKS

  • 150 YEAR AGO, we were such community people who left their tents for the pigeons which made nests on their pavilions and went to war, who allocated part of their heritages to the street animals, who set birds free for charity.
  • Our status TODAY is incomparable with our past...
  • They used to build houses even for birds. These housed which are named as "sparrow palace, bird chalet, bird house" used to built with diligence and as if a holly service was being fulfilled. These miniature structures which were built with diligence and even with their ventilation conceived used to be present in mosques, tomb structures, and chalets.
"In the past, the animals and people used to live together like relatives."
  • The cats were self-invited guests. The dogs didn't use to be allowed into the houses since they were mentioned in a hadith. But bread used to be sliced for those on the streets, even vows used to be made for them.
  • Bats, martens, weasels used to fill the most secluded corners of the houses.
  • The basement snake did not use to be disturbed, "Don't harm me for the sake of the Basilisk" used to be said when it was seen. Amity and hospitality used to be shown to every kind of animals whether nice or evil, they used to welcome individually.
  • Swallows on the lofts, spiders on the empty ceilings! If the spiders were going to be removed, it was paid care to be removed before the noon so that they could make nest elsewhere after the noon.
  • Especially bird nets did not use to be touched, the birds did not use to be bothered. The sin of a nest-breaker was great... The doves and pigeons did not use to be kept in cage, or it used to be considered sinful to keep them in cage. But this did not apply for songbirds like canary, goldfinch, chaffinch, greenfinch and titmouse. Cockatoo, parrot, lovebird were the birds of elegant houses and residences."
  • The storks used to take place on the top of the trees, on the chimneys. The storks were auspicious. Pilgrimage was attributed to it as it came from warm territories.
